Microchip Biotechnologies, Inc. (MBI)
The NanoBioProcessorTM technology
MBI was founded in July 2003 to apply a microchip-based fluidic technology based on Microscale On-chip Valves (MOV™) and pumps for sample preparation and analysis in the major life science and molecular diagnostics markets. MBI licensed exclusive world-wide rights for key MOV and other patents from U. C. Berkeley, and has developed additional intellectual property at the company.
The NanoBioProcessor platform can be disruptive in many major markets, including e.g., DNA sequencing, biodefense, forensics, clinical and point-of-care molecular diagnostics. MBI has strengthened the core NanoBioProcessor platform for two years through grants and contracts from NIH, DoD, HSARPA, and Northrop Grumman for DNA sequencing, biodefense, and forensics applications. For NIH, MBI is developing a next-generation microchip-based DNA sequencing laboratory instrument for the $100,000 genome project. For biodefense, MBI is coupling front-end bead-based microfluidic sample preparation on its BeadStormTM technology with the NanoBioProcessor platform which will implement microscale-Real-Time PCR and capillary electrophoresis. The first commercial MBI product will be an automated NanoBioPrepTM system that prepares and purifies nanoscale cycle sequencing samples for DNA sequencing. Future laboratory and portable products will incorporate advanced fluorescence detectors for forensic, life science and molecular diagnostic applications.
MBI is located in Dublin, California, and employs 25 skilled and experienced people. In-Q-Tel initially invested in MBI in July 2006. For more information about MBI, please visit www.microchipbiotech.com.
