Paratek
Electronically tunable RF circuitry for multi-function, multi-frequency wireless devices
Founded in 1998, Paratek develops tunable solutions for wireless communications applications. The Company’s products comprise a revolutionary new class of electronically tunable radio frequency (RF) components used in mobile phones and government radio systems. These include Adaptive Impedance Matching Modules (AIMM), RF filters, pre-selectors, phase shifters, and other advanced RF circuits. The foundation for these components is ParaScan™, a patented voltage-tunable dielectric materials technology (described further in the Technology Summary). Using this advanced material, Paratek produces ‘tunable integrated circuits’ that comprise custom networks of voltage-tunable capacitors. Used in RF front-end applications, these highly miniaturized circuits have the ability to continuously tune from 30 MHz to 5 GHz and bring to reality ‘frequency-agility’ in software-defined, multi-function radios.
For wireless handset applications, Paratek has produced a remarkable product called AIMM. These ‘Adaptive Impedance Matching Modules’ instantly sense and correct for impedance mismatches that can degrade the performance of wireless handsets. New generations of mobile phones will benefit greatly from AIMM, because the closed-loop system optimizes the overall performance of the phone…including the antenna circuitry, the power amplifier, and the battery. Next-generation multi-band mobile phones will be smaller, lighter, and have a broad array of features and functions. As a self-contained component, AIMM is particularly suited for these new devices because it allows designers a wide degree of latitude in meeting increasingly stringent performance objectives without increasing antenna size.
Paratek is headquartered in Columbia, Maryland and has two other offices in Nashua, New Hampshire, and Crystal Lake, Illinois. In-Q-Tel initially invested in Paratek in June, 2004. For more information about Paratek, please visit www.paratek.com.
