Rosum

Location technology that combines terrestrial TV and satellite GPS signals for reliable indoor and outdoor location of mobile assets

Founded in 2000 by GPS pioneer Dr. Jim Spilker, PhD, now Chairman, and Dr. Matthew Rabinowitz, PhD, now CTO, Rosum is the first company to leverage commercial broadcast TV signals for the purpose of locating mobile assets. Essentially, the national broadcast TV tower infrastructure serves as a terrestrial, multi-channel, high-power GPS that enables tracking of assets indoors. This solves the last-mile problem that has plagued GPS and Assisted GPS-based solutions to date. Rosum’s technology requires no modification to the TV signals and does not save or repackage them in any way.

Dr. Spilker was one of the original architects of the GPS constellation. Fellow GPS architect Brad Parkinson serves on our Technical Advisory Board. Rosum is based in Redwood City, California, and is led by CEO and wireless veteran Skip Speaks, former CEO of Kyocera Wireless and Triton Networks. Key Rosum partners include GPS leader Trimble Navigation, silicon tuner maker Microtune, and In-Q-Tel. In-Q-Tel initially invested in Rosum in October 2002.
