Seahawk Biosystems Corporation
Mobile biosensing
Seahawk Biosystems Corporation is developing the Talon Diagnostic System to provide veterinarians with a revolutionary multi-use, multiplexed laboratory instrument and consumable cartridges. Seahawk’s new biosensor is based on magnetic biochip technology developed and patented by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington, DC. The biosensor will allow veterinarians the unprecedented ability to asses a pet’s need for revaccination as well as detect multiple disease right in their own clinic, in real tie, reducing the time and expenses for veterinary care. This technology addresses an estimated market of approximately $2.1B in the US and $3.5B worldwide.
Specific applications of the Talon Diagnostic System include:
- Determining the need for revaccination;
- Detecting multiple diseases simultaneously;
- Screening for difficult to detect diseases; and
- Testing for genetic characteristics.
In regard to revaccination, the Talon Diagnostic System provides immunity assessments on a real-time basis based on the level of antibodies in the animal’s blood. As for disease diagnostic, the system provides the capability to simultaneously identify multiple diseases in real-time so that treatment can begin immediately.
Other market applications include biological testing for defense and security purposes—including early warning threat detection—along with compliance testing for food processing and water monitoring. Founded in 2004, Seahawk is located in Austin, Texas. In-Q-Tel initially invested in Seahawk in March, 2004. For more information about Seahawk, please visit www.seahawkbio.com.
